Future? Forever? Life is not a Journey…

By Anna Krol

Some of you are asking me about my future. Are you going to stay in Spain forever? Are you going to work as a freelancer forever? What are your future plans? When are you going to have a family?

Firstly, I don’t like the word forever, what does it mean? Till I die I assume? Can’t really say what will be my future cause I am changing each year, although luckily being closer to self-discovery each time. The future doesn’t really exist to me, it is still to shape by now. Cliche enough, I am really trying to live the moment.

In the novel Siddhartha written by Herman Hesse, the main hero and his companion leave their home to seek spiritual enlightenment. At the end of their journey, we can read:

“When someone seeks,” said Siddhartha, “then it easily happens that his eyes see only the thing that he seeks, and he is able to find nothing, to take in nothing because he always thinks only about the thing he is seeking, because he has one goal, because he is obsessed with his goal. Seeking means: having a goal. But finding means: being free, being open, having no goal.”

We all have things we look to achieve. Imagine you have a long-term goal. You really desire it, you fixate on it. On the way to get what you desire you change, the world changes and the environment around you is getting different as well. You commit your time and energy, and in the process, you develop an obsession that leads to misery any time you go step away from your objective. What could be a solution here? We need to loosen the definition of our wants and desires so that they can accommodate what the reality is offering us. We should sometimes, zoom out, step back and just let go.

Don’t get me wrong, I have some dreams and plans for this and next year…

Travel frequently. Set up an online business. Catch up with my friends. Meet new people. Learn properly Spanish and later learn another language. Be fit and learn something every day. Challenge myself. Write more, draw more, listen more, jump more!

I strongly encourage you to watch this video. I am a huge fan of Alan Watts!
